Q. What are the benefits in having your dog regularly groomed?

there are many skin conditions, learn more by joining one of our excellent courses, call us to discuss your interests.
A. Opportunity for a health check, preventing possible health problems before they arise and further possible veterinary costs to you. All grooms include a seven point health check which includes checking for any problems in the eyes, nose, teeth & gums, nails, skin & coat condition and anal glands (expression where needed).

Often a well trained and professional dog groomer will identify any difference in the wearing down of your dog's nails so spotting early identification of a possible imbalance in the dog's gait.

Not just a pretty face, short haired dogs can benefit from regular grooming with the right equipment, call us to discuss your hair problems!
A de-shedding treatment can reduce significant hair loss in your home, studies have shown a reduction of up to 70% less hair in the house. Removing the dead coat leaves the new healthy coat behind and helps keep some dogs cool.

Regular grooming and de-shedding may also reduces the build up of dog smells in the home, as the dead hair is removed air also circulates through the coat.

Grooming also increases blood flow to the hair follicles improving hair growth and stimulates the lymphatic system, aiding this essential system to deliver nutrients to the cells and clear toxins from the body.

Q. Do dogs enjoy being groomed?

A. Some dogs definitely enjoy being groomed and one long term benefit of regular grooming from the owner is to improve and increase the bond between them. The attention some dogs receive while being groomed is enjoyed and may be similar to the feeling humans enjoy while receiving a massage.

For some dogs grooming is only tolerated, as they have not been taught how to be handled or experienced grooming during their early developmental stages.

Grooming and health checks should be introduced to dogs during their sensitive period of development (between 3 weeks and 3 months) and this should be carried on into their juvenile and adult stages of life. Grooming should always be a positive experience, introduction to handling, being on table, being bathed and dried with a dryer should be included in all puppy training.

If you are experiencing any aggressive problems with your dog, act right away by seeking professional, understanding and supportive help.
For some dogs being groomed is incredibly stressful and they can experience, anxiety, fear or phobic responses to the sights, sounds and smells in a grooming salon. Some dogs respond by being motionless (either experiencing passive stress or learned helplessness) and others respond by using aggression as a form of self defence.

For some pushy dogs, they learn to use aggression (through operant conditioning) as a way of stopping the groomer carrying out any preparation or part of the grooming process. Some dogs may express anxiety, fear or phobic responses to only one part of the grooming process, such as the hair dryer or having their nails clipped. There is also the possibility that some dogs associate the dog grooming salon with the vet centre. They may associate the similar smells of surface disinfectants, being placed on a table or the sound of metallic objects with negative experiences while being at the vets. Certain breeds are also more sound sensitive, or are less confident than others.

Professional behavioural advice from a practicing, experienced and professional behaviour consultant and continued support is needed with any dog that demonstrates aggression during a grooming session. It is not within the role of a professional dog groomer to desensitise and counter-condition dogs with behavioural problems. Dogs that demonstrate behavioural problems need to be booked in as a behavioural groom where a behaviourist and professional dog groomer will work together to help resolve the problem. Some insurance companies will cover behaviour problems and owners may find the additional cost of this may be covered within their policy. Please check with your insurance company before you book a behavioural groom. In some extreme cases the behaviourist and dog groomer will also work in liaison with our veterinary advisor.

Please note: We do not condone the use of Acepromazine ACP within our dog grooming salon. Click here for reasons why not.

Q. How do we help nervous dogs feel more relaxed within our dog grooming salon?

A. We do not tolerate any harsh, rough or forceful handling of any dogs within the centre. All professional dog groomers and students are taught how to handle dogs correctly, how to read body language and how to modify their body language to the dog they are grooming. This may include techniques associated with calming signals.

Dog Appeasing Pheremones, the way forward for many dogs. Want to know more? then give us a call to see where this may help with your dog.
We also make use of DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromones) diffusers or sprays as these have been proven to aid the relaxation of some dogs. We have also used BACH Flower remedies where we consider this of benefit to the individual dog.

There are many additional complimentary and dietary suppliments that can help with skin and behavioural problems. Call us for more information on how we may be able to help.
If you use rescue remedies or similar with your dog then we are more than willing to use this during grooming, please bring your remedy with you. Please note: We will not administer any pharmacology without the express permission of your veterinary surgeon and the permission of our in house behaviour consultant.

No dog is rushed and while the grooming process may take longer in some situations older, arthritic or nervous dogs are given plenty of time with regular breaks, if this is deemed appropriate for the individual dog. All dogs may have comfort breaks and have access to clean, fresh water during the grooming process.

We do not operate a 'conveyor system' of grooming like some commercial premises. We dry all dogs by hand and do not use drying cabinets.

We encourage owners to bring treats for their dogs so we can ensure that the grooming experience is a positive one.

Q. What products do we use on the dogs?

A. As well as being dedicated dog grooming products and hypo allergic we adhere to our Green and Ethical policies by ensuring the high quality products we use are not tested on animals and are biodegradable.

We offer a full range of specialist shampoos to help with your dog's skin and hair type, ask about what we suggest will help your dog.
We also have specialised shampoos available at a small additional charge to enhance your dog's colour, skin or hair condition.

If your dog has a veterinary prescribed shampoo we are happy to use this during the grooming session, please request this at the time of booking.

The professional range of equipment used within the dog grooming salon ensures the right equipment is available for each individual dog's need. We also have a mobile hoist to assist elderly or disabled dogs. Please inform us that your dog is disabled or needs additional support at the time of your booking.
